Ali Liebert is a queer filmmaker and performer raised on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. After studying musical theater at the Canadian College of Performing Arts, Liebert quickly gained momentum as a rising television and film actor in Canada. Her career has taken her around the world, garnering more than 100 acting roles as well as numerous awards and nominations for both acting and directing.
Liebert is best known for her portrayal of Betty McRae in Global’s hit series Bomb Girls, a role that earned her a Canadian Screen Award and a Leo Award. Television credits include Wild Cards (The CW/CBC), One of Us Is Lying (NBCUniversal/Peacock), Family Law (Global/The CW), Van Helsing (Netflix/Syfy), Mech-X4 (Disney XD), Lost Girl (Syfy), Ten Days in the Valley (ABC), iZombie (The CW), Legends of Tomorrow (The CW), Harper’s Island (CBS) and Strange Empire and Intelligence, both for CBC.
Feature film credits include Troy Ruptash’s They Who Surround Us, Sook-Yin Lee’s Year of the Carnivore (TIFF), Ben Ratner’s Down River (VIFF) and Foxfire (TIFF), based on the Joyce Carol Oates novel and written and directed by Palme d’Or-winning filmmaker Laurent Cantet. Liebert also appeared in Stephen Chbosky’s Wonder opposite Julia Roberts and Jacob Tremblay.
Liebert began her directing career in 2018 with the Lifetime television movie Amish Abduction. The thriller earned her a Directors Guild of Canada Award nomination for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Movies for Television and Mini-Series. The film was also nominated for Leo Awards for Best Television Movie and Best Lead Performance by a Female.
As a director, Liebert is recognized internationally for helping expand LGBTQ+ representation within the traditional romantic comedy genre. She directed Hallmark Channel’s first queer-led original movie, The Holiday Sitter, starring Jonathan Bennett. The film was named one of the Top 15 Christmas Movies of 2022 by both Vanity Fair and Vogue and received a GLAAD Media Award nomination for Outstanding Film, Streaming or TV.
Recent directing credits include Surviving My Father: The Rachel Jeffs Story (Lifetime), as well as the Hallmark Channel original movies Haunted Harmony Mystery: Prelude to a Wedding, Love of the Irish and Christmas in Notting Hill, all filmed on location in Ireland and England.
